Whether you are in a large city or a small town, networks are alive and well, and most likely growing all around you. It is important to discover where they are and who is leading them. In each city there are a number of leaders who are top networkers. You want to find those who are ready, willing and able to help. When the Networlding book first came out five years ago we took about 1000 people through the process. The majority of these people were job seekers. Interestingly, they would all say, “I am never going to let my network go again. I have definitely realized the benefit of creating and keeping my network alive.” Guess how many of those people really kept to their word? I can count them on one hand!Additionally, there are a number of those people whom I now see again, already on their second time around since the book hit the shelf. Older and wiser, these current job seekers, once again, promise they will do it differently this time.Just by taking the time to go through this tutor you will find yourself with a powerful set of tools to help you make sure you are not one of those people. Keep your network vibrant. Understand how to leverage even two great relationships by having regular exchanges with these people. It will make all the difference.
Fitting Networking Into Your Daily Life
Have a set time to follow up and also reach out to your network. For example, my time is 7:00 a.m. on Friday morning. I make sure each Monday and Friday I take the time to email my network. The great thing about email is that I can do this and not bother anyone.Continually collect things like articles or quotes that are informative and inspirational that you can send to your network. I keep a folder for these types of things. Also, as you are seeking a new position, once a month, send out an update to your support network. Of course, ask them ahead of time if they would be open to receiving a monthly update. Tell them it won’t be more than once a month and you would really appreciate their support.I always read my monthly reports from those who take the time to do this. They are very helpful for me to see who is in fact hiring and the details of each person’s job search gives me insight for others whom I coach. Finally, remember those people who helped you in any way when you do get a job. One of my good friends and the best networker I know, Pat Ewert, had what she called a Launch Party when she landed her new job. There were about 100 people there. What a way to honor her network. Those of us who have had the honor of knowing Pat would do anything to help her succeed whenever she asks because she really knows how to network well, fitting networking into her daily life.
A Preview of the First Step of Networlding
Values are connected to our emotions. The word that most often comes to mind around those who are conscious about their values is passion. For example, my passion around making a difference is present daily as I go out in the world, speaking, coaching, training and consulting. Just the other day, for example, I heard from a daughter of a top leader in Chicago. She asked if she could take up some of my valuable time and get some coaching. She also was concerned about the fee. I shared with her about our philanthropy initiative for young leaders to get lower cost coaching. I am passionate about helping our emerging leaders, under the age of thirty. So, for me, it was an honor to be asked to help.
From my passion I have met so many leaders. And, so many of these leaders are just as passionate about seeing their children succeed. My goal is to help those young leaders become successful with the values of integrity and making a difference at the core of their work. What I find is that reaching out and helping these young leaders just continues to feed my passion and provide a roadmap for success for all. So, when we speak about value-based networking which is Networlding, we are encouraging people to find those values that inspire them and others as well. Our values are the source of our actions. Probe to learn the values of those with whom you build relationships. For me, integrity and follow-through are most important. What matters to you?
Follow Up:
Click on the tutorial for 1.5. It will provide you with an in depth look at the website www.linkedin.com. You will view my profile on the site as well as highlights of the site. Some of the important features for job seekers are:
- Advanced search: you can search for individuals by their title, geographic location or company. With this feature you can restrict your search to only people who are currently employed at a particular company. LinkedIn proves that there often hundreds of professionals from the manager level up at leading organizations.
- Contact settings: This feature at the bottom of each profile indicates the various connections people are open to receiving from other networking on the site. There are setting choices such as career opportunities or job inquiries that are especially important and relevant to job seekers.
- The ability to see your network’s network: When you connect with someone you will also have the choice to view someone else’s network. By viewing just a few of your network’s network you will begin to see much better how networks work. Often, for example, you can find shared network connections you had no idea existed. The site really shows you, “It’s a small world after all!”
Don’t forget to make a link request with Melissa Giovagnoli after you have completed your profile. You will instantly have better link strength with some of the best networkers on LinkedIn. Remember to reference The Networking Tutor - For Jobseekers.
